“It was on the Monday morning…

The gas man came to call”. So goes the Flanders and Swan song. Dunno? Link here:

The song has partial relevance to the Openreach man who came to install our full-fibre connection. The conversation started with me saying “this is your challenge should you choose to accept it”, then outlining that the Fibre Optic cable should go from the pole to the other end of the cottage from the existing copper wire connection.

“Ah! You see the problem with that is…”. As he outlined several reasons (all very sound and logical) as to why it wasn’t a good idea ranging from limited access to a cherry picker to the Working At Heights Directive (WAH) which meant that for every ladder move to tap in cable clips a restraining leash and hole had to be drilled.

No problem, plan B involved access to the bedroom near where the existing copper cable arrived. More WAH issues, not least being drilling through the stone walls which, incidentally, can only be done at ground level and joining cables (ditto).

Which led to plan C (kitchen) which actually was probably the optimum place for the router. Plan agreed, the Engineer set to!
