The Ducks

Well OK, we haven’t actually got ducks, but they are around.  When the river is high, and maybe their usual overnight quarters has a thirty knot current going through, we think they check out the pond.  We have certainly disturbed two mallards on a couple of occasions.  So in the grand tradition of those selfless politicians, working on tirelessly on our (their) behalf, we decided to offer a proper overnight B&B let.

We had the marine ply, we had a couple of used 3 x 3 fence posts, so that bit was easy.  Flotation was the problem – one we solved with 3 x 3m 100mm lengths of soil pipe with end caps.  Bingo but what about the bedroom?

Again, solved easily by the cheap and cheerful chicken coop we used to transport some of the chickens as the Eglu was too big to go properly on the van.  Result –
19-02. Had to have a rethink on the house as we now have some small chickens called Frizzles – see the chicken page

Decoys in action

The morning routine goes like this.  Sandie goes out and keeps the donks quiet by giving them a hay sack.  She talks to them, asking them to be quiet and not to bray a “good morning” to us.  At this point two ducks fly out of the pond, but it is too dark to catch a glimpse.

The routine has changed because of the light levels, so that this morning, I was mucking out, and Sandie went to the pond.  She came back on tiptoes whispering that there were two ducks on the pond.  Sure enough, two Mallards, one M, one F, flew off.  The B&B has had its first letting!
