Quercus, an oak…

by any other name. Browsing the local Facebook group (useful for local news, gossip and buy and sell) and this little chap popped up. “I pick up Acorns and berries, and all manner of things, pop them into pots, until they grow too big. £15 to a good home”!

Which this one clearly has. Grown both too big, and we’ve got a home for it.

It’s either Quercus Rubra, or Robur. According to the vendor the currently lovely yellow leaves turn a Maine red. Rubra is known as the “Red Oak” but is a native of North America which rules it out except that it can be found in British parkland and ornamental gardens. And… the vendor walks Llandod Rock Pool gardens, an homage to all things Victorian, so she could well have picked up an acorn from one of the special trees.
