Strange that you join the new age by closing but that is what Lloyds are doing, and by so doing the Town joins the myriad of others (multiple is the word of the moment, Harry – Ed., jus’ sayin’) across the country that are without banking facilities. Not strictly true in this Town as HSBC is still operating and probably still will in the short term. That bank always has a queue outside it, due mainly it has to be said because of now outdated COVID rules. Lloyds is usually busy and has two cashiers on duty each day and talking to them it appears that the bank will have a “social” presence along with Barclays which closed recently in a social hub that the Town has created to deal with local council matters such as benefits and social care.
Clearly we don’t know the economics of the branch but the fact that there is a steady stream of people – at least someone is in when you go past means that not insignificant numbers of people will be devoid of banking facilities – or even an interview space with which to deal with their personal matters. In addition to the remaining bank the Post Office offers money transfer facilities, or of course the internet can be used.
Builth Wells is the closest other town and branches there have also closed leaving only Barclays. Not news, but it is another nail in the coffin of some High Streets, and apart from chic “atmospheric” restaurants what else can one use these buildings for?
