Fish head

The fish appears to be relatively fresh – look at the eye, I’ve seen similar colour opacity on Tesco’s fish counter.  Given that a head has a ratio to body of say four, or five, then the whole fish must have been four feet in length and probably longer.  Weight?  Difficult to say.  The largest (heaviest) fish was caught in 1951 and weighed 50lbs.  This was a bizarre incident, and I had to wrestle the head from the dog, (which caused the damage to the mouth/nose), my recollection after the event was that it might weigh a bag of sugar (3 lbs), which using the same metric, might mean the fish comes in at 12/15lbs.

The working hypothesis on the kill is that it was:

a) Otter (but would it carry/drag the fish to the pond to eat it?  And no evidence of fish debris. b) Osprey – they fly overhead, but would it not take it to the nest to eat?

On how it came to be where it was:

a) Red Kite spotted the head, and tried to carry it away, and dropped it.

Do you have any other theories?
