A primal fascination with water, the river, and the atomosphere which reminds me of when I used to fish it as a 16/18 year old at Symond’s Yat in Herefordshire. There is always something to look at and it is always different. Since we’ve been here, we have seen it at flood levels and at almost its lowest which it is now (05/12/16). The current level at Rhayader just 4/5 miles upstream of us is shown here: Check out the current (no pun) river level here.
The summer low level is 6″. Canoeing is not allowed if the water is below the red mark.
23-02-17. Hadn’t been to the River since Tuesday (Thurs today) so a bit of a shock to find it in flood. Shouldn’t have been a shock really, as the last 24 hours has seen a heavy rainfall. Not necessarily heavy all the time, but nevertheless it was persistent. This is the view from the back gate.
The level is about 3m higher at Erwood which is below Builth. Our normal level indicator is at Rhayader but when you access it via the interwebbed feet it is not visible. Normally the tree in the centre is very accessible and the level is about a metre below it.
The bend is usually a trickle in the far corner. Not this morning, and the walk around the river shows that the level has fallen around 0.6m overnight
This picture below is normally a beach, but not now.

It’s not just the water either, the noise the wind makes is a roaring sound both from nearby and a more distant one from the trees on the other side of the river and higher up. When they bend they really shake around in a scary fashion. I think I need to get my hair cut.
